Current research focuses on the economics of production, energy balance, emissions and externalities of biofuel production. This focus includes the impact of biofuels on crop and livestock production, and the interface with both energy and agricultural policy.

He is the author of more than 150 articles, chapters and books on farm and risk management in agricultural production, technology assessment, strategic management of agribusiness firms, and structural change in agriculture, and agricultural policy.

Publications in recent years have appeared in a number of academic journals and popular outlets including the American Journal of Agricultural Economics, Review of Agricultural Economics, Journal of Agricultural and Applied Economics, American Journal of Alternative Agriculture, Food Technology, Agricultural Economics, and Choices.
