Trade and Development Seminars - Fall Semester 2009

Faculty who specialize in development and trade have developed a weekly seminar/workshop series for Applied Economics faculty, graduate students and outside researchers to present their research.

This seminar will be held every Friday at 10:30 am in room 119 Classroom Office Building unless otherwise noted. The seminar will end @ 11:45 am.

  • Sep. 25           Misty Heggeness, Ph.D. Candidate, Department of Applied Economics, will present “Evidence of shifts in intra-household allocation under exogenous changes in family policy and administrative procedures: The case of school enrollment in Chile.”

  • Oct. 16            Shinya Takamatsu, Ph.D. Candidate, Department of Applied Economics, will present "Conditional Cash Transfer Programs and Spillover Effects within Households in Nicaragua.”

  • Oct. 23            Eugenie Maïga, Ph.D. Candidate, Department of Applied Economics, will present "The Impact of Mother’s Education on Child Health and Nutrition in Developing Countries: Evidence from a Natural Experiment in Burkina Faso."

  • Oct. 30            Omar Da'ar, Ph.D. Candidate, Department of Applied Economics, will present "Trade in genetically modified-sensitive industries and role of biotechnology, innovation and intellectual property rights protection: Cross country analysis." (in Room 230)

  • Nov. 6             Uttam Sharma, Ph.D. Candidate, Department of Applied Economics, will present “Public and Private Schools in Nepal: A Comparative Perspective.”

  • Nov. 13           Cristina Vinyes, Ph.D. Candidate, Department of Applied Economics, will present “Dynamic Constraints to Growth: the Case of Brazil." (in Room 230)

  • Nov. 20           Departmental Faculty Retreat (probably no seminar) 

  • Nov. 27           THANKSGIVING (no seminar) 

  • Dec. 4             Dilip Mookherjee, Professor of Economics, Boston University, will present “Productivity Effects Of Land Reform: A Study of Disaggregated Farm Data in West Bengal, India.” Paper co-authored with Pranab Bardhan and available online here.

  • Dec. 11           Dr. Scott Rozelle, Helen F. Farnsworth Senior Fellow, Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies, Stanford University, will present “Nutrition, Care and Education:  Evidence from a Randomized Control Trial in China."
