Gigi DiGiacomo is working jointly with Robert King to conduct case studies that compare local food marketing chains in the Minneapolis-St.Paul metropolitan area with non-local marketing chains. These case studies will be several in a set of studies conducted nationally using a common methodology.

The case study project is part of a cooperative research agreement between the University of Minnesota and the USDA Economic Research Service that is intended to provide better understanding of barriers toexpansion of local foods markets.

During 2007-2008 Ms. DiGiacomo served as Endowed Chair in the School of Agriculture's Agricultural Systems Program during which she explored retail store demand for locally-produced, organic produce, meat and dairy products. Ms. DiGiacomo also partnered with the USDA Agricultural Market News Service to develop an Upper Midwest organic price reporting service for grains and feedstuffs.

Prior to serving as Endowed Chair, Ms. DiGiacomo worked as a freelance economist -- collaborating with farmers, Extension educators and other professionals to develop publications about farm marketing, planning, and business management.  She has conducted business planning workshops for the Land Stewardship Project, Center for Farm Financial Management, Sustainable Farming Association, Minnesota Department of Agriculture and the Minnesota Institute for Sustainable Agriculture.
