Congratulations to Associate Professor Laura Kalambokidis!
At the 2009 AAEA Awards & Fellows Recognition Ceremony held on July 27, 2009 in Milwaukee Wisconsin, she received the istinguished Extension/Outreach Program Award for an Individual with Less than 10 Years' Experience.
Professor Kalambokidis has gained national recognition for her work on the Extension’s public value – work that has educated citizens, has helped shape the design of Extension programs here in Minnesota, and has had a profound effect on Extension educators and administrators around the country.
In an article in the October 2002 /Journal of Extension/ on “The Role of Extension in Agricultural Economics Departments,” Professor Michael Martin (then) of the University of Florida said: “…agricultural economics can create an internal Extension clientele by providing expertise to those who make administrative and fiscal decisions. The analytical framework available from economics can be quite useful to administrators.” The “Building Extension’s Public Value” workshop was Professor Kalambokidis’ response to this call. This workshop was created to help anyone who develops, delivers, or seeks funding for Extension programs articulate their programs’ public value. The workshop has been conducted for Extension professionals in ten states, and has been presented at state, regional, and national Extension conferences.
Demand for public value workshops nationwide has highlighted the need to increase Extension’s capacity to conduct these workshops. To that end, in 2007 Professor Kalambokidis worked with graduate student Theresa Bipes to create curriculum materials for the “Building Extension’s Public Value” workshops: a participant workbook, presenter’s guide, and accompanying Powerpoint™ file. These materials are available for Extension scholars across the country to use in conducting public value workshops for Extension staff in their own states. They include research citations from a wide range of fields that support the public value of Extension programs in those fields.
Based on the curriculum, Professor Kalambokidis developed a train-the-trainer course that she has since taught via webinar to hundreds of Extension and CSREES scholars. At least 21 of these trainees have taught “Building Extension’s Public Value” workshops to Extension professionals in their own states.
We are delighted that Dr. Kalambokidis has been recognized by her peers for the 2009 Outstanding Extension Program Award.
