April 18, 2007 - Tom Stinson on MPR:

The State of the State's Economy with State Economist Tom Stinson aired on April 18, 2007 on Midday program on Minnesota Public Radio.

"State Economist Tom Stinson says March wasn't a great month for job growth in Minnesota. The state added 3,000 jobs, seasonally adjusted, down from 11,000 in January. Are the March numbers cause for concern?"

April 10, 2007 - Chengyan Yue, New Faculty Member:

We are very pleased to announce that Chengyan Yue has accepted an offer to join the University of Minnesota as the Todd and Barbara Bachman Endowed Chair in Horticultural Marketing. She will hold the rank of assistant professor with a joint appointment in the Department of Horticultural Science and Department of Applied Economics.

Chengyan will begin her duties on or before 20 August 2007. She will bring with her from Iowa State excellent graduate research experience with marketing problems in the fresh produce industry. She will also bring with her a strong and infectious dose of enthusiasm. We are very excited to welcome her aboard.

We sincerely thank the members of the search committee for the excellent work they did over the long lifespan of this search. Mary Meyer chaired the committee and kept their spirits high througout. Gordie Bailey represented horticultural industries. Professors Buhr, Erwin and Markhart were faculty representatives, Julie Weisenhorn represented staff and Jennifer Drew represented graduate students in the first phases of the search. We also thank Kathy Lloyd, who provided outstanding support to the committee, and Laura Kalisch and Laura Bipes for their help with administrative matters.

We'll have an informal reception to welcome Chengyan when she joins us. In the meantime, she can be reached by email at yuechy@iastate.edu.

April 10, 2007 - Bosu Seo Receives Award:

Ph.D. student Bosu Seo has been selected to receive the 2007 President’s Student Leadership and Service Award for his work as Coordinator for the SMART Learning Commons in Magrath Library. An awards banquet with President Bruininks will be held on Thursday, May 3, 2007.

In other exciting news, Bosu has been invited to present two papers, both co-authored with Ben Senauer. "The Effect of Education on Health in Relation to Country of Birth: An Emphasis of Information Sensitivity to Health Knowledge," will be presented at the Western Economic International Association meeting in Seattle, Washington, June 30-July 3, 2007. The other paper, "The Role of Social Capital on Health in Elderly People with the Advent of the Baby-Boom Generation’s Aging," will be presented at the AAEA meeting in Portland, Oregon, July 29-August 1, 2007.
