The Department of Applied Economics is nationally recognized for its research, undergraduate and graduate teaching, and extension programs.  Relative to our peer departments at other Land Grant universities, we stand out because of the breadth and balanced strength of our programs.

We offer highly regarded undergraduate majors in Agricultural and Food Business Management (a joint major with the Carlson School of Management) and in Applied Economics, with current combined enrollment of 214 students.  We are the administrative home for the Applied Economics Graduate program, a unique partnership of applied economists from four collegiate units across the University of Minnesota.  That program currently has 118 M.S. and Ph.D. students.

Our research and extension/outreach activities are focused in four key areas:

Much of our work is interdisciplinary, and we have a rich network of collaborations with other units across the University.  We are the home for several strong centers that contribute significantly to research and extension/outreach programs.

Our staff includes 34 resident faculty members, 21 full-time professionals working on grants and contracts or in centers, and 15 support staff.  We also have close working relationships with regional extension educators working in the areas of Agricultural Business Management and Community Economics, who are located around the state. Our administrative home is the College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences (CFANS). We also have strong ties to the Minnesota Agricultural Experiment Station and the University of Minnesota Extension Service.
